Failure to Stop or Report

These offences are both covered under Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 which provides that:

  • A driver must stop and, if required to do so by any person having reasonable grounds for so requiring, give his name and address and also the name and address of the owner of the vehicle and its registration mark;
  • If for any reason the driver of the vehicle does not give his name and address, he must report the accident;
  • The accident must be reported at a police station as soon as is reasonably practicable and, in any case, within twenty-four hours of the occurrence of the accident

The Penalties of Failing to Stop or Report

The penalties for each of these penalties are as follows:-

  • Between 5-10 penalty points
  • Disqualification from driving
  • Up to 6 months imprisonment
